Why is it that Samurai Jack is the ONLY one of the series to claim they 'grew up with their audience' that actually DID?

Seriously, it's NOT HARD TO DO:

Samurai Jack just gave us...Samurai Jack. They didn't give us Superman destroying Metropolis fighting Zod, Batman shooting people left and right, or stuff out of a bad, grim dark fanfic with such a complicated plot that even if it DID make sense would need a string chart to comprehend. They gave us Samurai Jack, but dealing with more mature issues that the original audience actually WOULD be able to understand and appreciate 13 years later.

Why is that such a hard formula for people to get? Original series + more mature issues the original audience would now be old enough to understand an appreciate = growing up with your audience.

Why is that so hard for people to understand?

Because execs are not in touch with what people want and don't hire people who actually know the source material (and if they do, they certainly don't know it very well).

And that's unfortunately a very good point.

I'll admit, I've never watched Samurai Jack.

Now I have an excuse to hunt down the DVDs and marathon it. Now that I know that it will actually have an end.

If you ask me it's because Jack is still fundamentally the same hero we remember, just he has some serious survivor guilt now that he can't travel back to save his family. Making a hero care less about the lives he endangers doesn't grow him up, it makes him an asshole.

I was never a fan of Samurai Jack but was it really necessary to "age up" the show? I have started to feel contempt for the poor attempts at this (5Ds -imo-, Tri, Riverdale). I know that many say that this one is actually superspeshulawesome but it still brings a bad taste to my mouth.

Why is this starting to become a trend? Ironically, I have said that Steven Universe would be more fitting as a teen/adult show but that's more because you just FEEL that the Crewniverse is fighting against the radar to show what they want to show.

Though even in the hypothetical case SU was "aged up", I would still prefer if it sticked to its original tone. But I guess Samurai Jack was already like this, which is probably why it never appealed to me back in the day.

/Sorry rant

Fair enough. I'm tired of it too, I just feel Samurai Jack is an exception to the rule of terrible 'age up' shows.

Yeah, I guess so. I'm not sure if I will join the hype train since I wasn't the wagon back in the golden age. I still don't know why I never liked Samurai Jack but I guess it was because I was still a child back then and made an even bigger emphasis on fun.

Fair enough.

And that's fine, it's not for everyone. I liked it, but if you're not into it, you're not into it. And that's perfectly fine.

Thanks.

I do find funny that my old pals back at Tvtropes ascended Jack in the Trope Pantheons last year in the middle of a "Let's ascend everyone from CN!" hype train. Hilarious in Hindsight much? Guess this warranted a rework. Gonna check out Jack in the house of Travel to see if I'm right or if they held back the rework until Season 5 is done.

Still, lol.

Something I really like about the new series is how even though they can get away with a lot more now, they're still showing an admirable amount of restraint in regards to the violence.

They are showing a lot more than what they could before--we got see some dead bodies and someone get stabbed in the eye--but they're not going over the top with it. Aku's robots haven't been replaced by living soldiers for Jack to hack up into red mist. There wasn't a fountain of blood spurting from that person's eye. And we didn't linger on the dead bodies, showing them to be horrifically mutilated or anything.

It's all done very tastefully. It's actually being mature.

This is going to be a great show.

I think its a combo of building a future fanbase and trying to pander to the long time fans. Remember unlike most shows Samurai Jack is a labor of love For Gendy and he made sure that he keeps the helm while this ship sails. Other shows which have tried to be mature have faltered because they just show the problem and give no adequate way to look at it. Meanwhile Jack's life has become quite dark. We've seen dead bodies on screen now and actual blood bleeding out instead of just being red scratches.

If we're being honest about this the best way for Jack to get home would have been to kill Aku first before looking for the time portal. Probably the only time portal left is watched over by the Guardian and that was more than likely relocated after his first visit to a place where Aku couldn't scry on it. There might also be other ways to time travel seeing that other planets do exist. The hunters... I forget the name... were from another planet.

Also maturity is subjective and can only be understood when dealing with it personally. I doubt the ones who think sex and gore equal mature understand that that isn't mature. Its the reasons behind it that make it mature.

I happened to like Man of Steel so I can't agree there (plus DC has never been known for family friendly all the time. Legendary just brought it out.) Though I haven't seen the new Samurai Jack yet (forgot it started last week.)

And to each their own. But my point remains the same that a lot of 'grew up with their audience' adaptations or remakes fall into the same trap.

Surprisingly Nickelodeon is showing promise bringing old shows like "Hey Arnold" for one last special. Much like Jack, Hey Arnold  ended with some unanswered questions. It didn't air yet, but so far everything is looking good so far. Not sure that counts as growing with the audience since I don't think there gonna tackle more mature themes but still.

You know considering we haven't seen Aku in the new episode, do you think like Jack he isn't in the best shape either? And if that's true I wonder what would cause that? Then again they might be just waiting for the moment to show Aku again since it's been awhile since we've seen him.

That is quite possible. Since Aku apparently hasn't shown up to fight Jack in person for some time, perhaps he just GAVE UP trying to kill Jack long before he lost the sword.

Most people (like Michael Bay) seem to think that "grown up" is just a simple formula. Boobs + explosions = FUCK YEAH GROWN UP!

Yeah, nope. I seriously wonder how the travesty known as Bayformers even has such a big audience. He totally ruined the franchise.

More ruined the prospect for a FILM franchise with anything other than what he produces. The rest of the franchise is still doing just fine.

Cool. I try to watch CN, but I find a lot of it's lineup to be meh. I enjoy Adventure Time, but haven't watched that in about 2 years. Teen Titans Go soured me of that station. It's a travesty, a cruel mockery of the original series. A Celestiaawful excuse for entertainment that's horrendously overplayed (in fact, taking up HALF of CN's current broadcast lineup). I could launch in a full-fledged rant, but I won't. Aside from a few exceptions, I find the rest of their lineup painfully generic.

And why the heck is Teen Titans Go the show that gets extremely long marathons is beyond me.
